Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living is the department responsible for administering the health care coverage and delivering health care services to the residents of Manitoba. When planning your move, you need to consider updating your health card since it includes your address. Frequently Asked Questions

I am moving from another province to Manitoba. What do I do?

First, make sure you are eligible to apply for coverage! You have to:

  • be legally entitled to be in Canada
  • intend to live in Manitoba for at least 183 days of the year

Next, you can move on to registering for a Manitoba Health Card. You will have to:

  • Fill out a Manitoba Health Registration Form.
  • Provide your previous province’s/territory’s health card number.
  • Provide proof of Canadian citizenship. This can be a copy of your Canadian Birth Certificate, Canadian Citizenship Card or Permanent Resident Confirmation Card (make sure it’s a copy of both sides!).

Finally, when you have all your documents ready, you can send them all to the Registration and Client Services Unit

300 Carlton Street
Winnipeg MB
R3B 3M9

Business hours: Monday to Friday 8:30 to 16:30

Note that your coverage will start on the first day of the third month after you arrive in Manitoba. This means that if you were to arrive in Manitoba on April 29, April will be your first month, May and June the following two months and thus your coverage would start on July 1.

Until your health coverage starts, it is recommended to keep your coverage with your previous health plan.

I am moving out of Manitoba temporarily. What should I do?

You might be planning on living outside of Manitoba for an extended period for a vacation or an extended travel leave. If so, you can be away from the province for up to seven months and keep your Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living coverage.

But, to make sure that your coverage remains uninterrupted during your absence, it is recommended to report any expected absence of 90 days or more in a 12-month period to Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living before you leave. You can do so by:

Make sure you provide your full name, permanent Manitoba address and temporary new address, the date of departure and expected date of return to Manitoba, Manitoba Health number, and the names of any family members accompanying you.

That being said, you should note that it is recommended that you consider private insurance options along with your Manitoba Health coverage to make sure that you are well covered for all your health care needs while you are out of the country.

I am moving out of Manitoba permanently. What should I do?

When you move out of Manitoba permanently, you have to apply for an Out-of-Province Certificate to the Registration and Client Services Unit. Your coverage will depend on your situation:

  • If you plan on moving to another province or territory: your Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living coverage will carry on for the remainder of the month in which you move to your new province/territory, on top of two additional months (except for personal care home benefits). Make sure that you contact your new province’s/territory’s health insurance plan as soon as you arrive there.
  • If you plan on moving to another country: your Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living coverage will carry on for the remainder of the month in which you move to your new province/territory, on top of two additional months.
  • If you plan on moving away from Manitoba and are a Temporary Foreign Worker: your Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living coverage will end on the day that you leave Manitoba.

To apply for an Out-of-Province Certificate, contact the Registration and Client Services Unit:

Finally, we hope this article has shed some light on an important step to take in your moving process. That being said, an equally important task is changing your address on your driver’s licence!
