Frequently asked questions

  • What accreditations should you look for in a moving company

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is a non-profit organization that collects and evaluates data from various industries, including the moving industry. By analyzing customer complaints, reviews, and ratings, the BBB provides valuable insights for individuals looking for a moving company.

These ratings act as a roadmap, assisting individuals in making informed choices when selecting a moving service. Along with delivering clear-cut reviews, the BBB also offers dispute resolution services designed specifically for the moving industry, promoting trust and transparency in the market for both customers and movers.

    Waldo Verified Preliminary Verification

To become Waldo Verified, a company must first pass a preliminary verification process. Waldo Verified is a verification process for moving companies that ensures they meet certain standards of professionalism and trustworthiness.

At a minimum, moving companies on MovingWaldo must complete a preliminary verification process, considering key factors including accreditations, reviews, years of experience, professionalism, and a positive online presence.

    ATA-MSC ProMover Certification

The American Trucking Associations (ATA), with a 90-year history, serves as the voice of the entire U.S. freight industry through its nationwide representation across all 50 states.

ProMover accreditation is granted by ATA to moving companies after a thorough background investigation, including operations and prior work. These businesses commit to following the ATA's Code of Ethics and ethical business practices. ATA-MSC ProMover Certified companies undergo an annual evaluation to ensure ongoing adherence to program requirements.

The United States Movers Association (USMA) is a national trade association that represents carriers and agents in the household goods moving industry, including moving companies that uphold high standards of customer service.

Members of the USMA endeavor to provide competitive pricing and take exceptional care of their clients' possessions.

  • What are the credentials verified by MovingWaldo?

    All states

    USDOT Number

The USDOT number, issued by the FMCSA, acts like a unique identifier for a moving company's vehicle safety data. This number is crucial because it helps check if the company follows the rules of the road for both commercial and private vehicles. It's used to monitor how well they stick to these rules by doing audits, investigating crashes, and carrying out inspections.

This number is mandatory for any moving company operating on public roads, whether they're transporting goods within a state or across state lines.

Each commercial vehicle needs to first be registered before getting its own USDOT number. While some companies opt to consolidate their fleet under a single USDOT number, others may have multiple numbers for individual vehicles.

    MC Number

An MC Number, or 'motor carrier' identifier, is an identification issued by the FMCSA. Alongside the mandatory USDOT number, the MC Number is essential for moving companies engaged in interstate commerce, especially when transporting federally regulated commodities.

    MX Number

An MX number is a registration ID for motor carriers owned or controlled by a Mexican citizen or someone based in Mexico, or for motor carriers operating between the U.S. and Mexico. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issues MX numbers to ensure movers adhere to regulations and maintain safety standards during transportation.

    BIPD coverage

Bodily Injury and Property Damage (BIPD) coverage is an indispensable requirement for moving companies. It's a legal imperative, ensuring movers can bear financial responsibility in incidents involving injury or property damage.

This insurance encompasses medical expenses and property damage for all affected parties, including bystanders and their belongings. Across states, there's a usual minimum mandate of $750,000 for BIPD coverage for moving businesses.

    MTR Number

The MTR Number, also known as CAL-T Number or CPUC Permit Number, serves as a distinct identifier for property motor carriers. For intrastate carriers in California handling household goods and passengers, an active CPUC permit issued by the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is mandatory.

This designation needs to be visibly displayed on the power unit and incurs a one-time fee. Additionally, carriers must annually submit an equipment list and proof of insurance to maintain compliance.

    PUCO Number

Moving companies operating in Ohio must obtain a PUCO number to conduct intrastate business and comply with intrastate operating authority regulations.

Movers registered with PUCO undergo checks to ensure they have liability insurance, properly registered vehicles with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and possess relevant licenses, such as a weight distance tax permit.

    FDACS Number

In Florida, Chapter 507 of the Florida Statutes mandates that any business involved in intrastate moving of goods must register with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS).

Registration is compulsory for intrastate movers in addition to any local licenses, but it does not replace them. Intrastate movers and brokers need to renew their registration every two years.

PBCCA (Palm Beach County Consumer Affairs) Number

Palm Beach County mandates that all local household moving companies obtain a license, or "business permit," from the Consumer Affairs Division. Their license means that they meet the minimum requirements of the Palm Beach County Moving Ordinance.

    MDPU Number

A moving company that intends to move household items within Massachusetts must first obtain operating authority from the Department of Public Utilities (DPU). Once approved, they receive an operating number known among movers as MDPU.

Every year, these moving companies are required to send the DPU updated insurance documents when they renew their license. They also need to update their pricing details by filing a new tariff whenever they change their rates or fees.

  • How much does a moving company cost?

A moving company in Washington, D.C., typically costs around $130 per hour, requiring a minimum booking of 2–3 hours.

    • Special Items: Items like valuable paintings or large, fragile objects may incur extra charges for handling or crating. It is best to check online for free estimates.
    • Packing and Unpacking Services: If you opt for movers to pack and unpack your belongings, it will add to the overall cost. Some local or long-distance movers sell packing materials for your own convenience.
    • Travel Time Charge: Charges may apply for travel between locations and to/from their office.
    • Truck Fee: Some companies include a fee for the fuel used during the move.
    • Insurance Type: Basic insurance is usually free, covering around 60 cents per pound. Full value protection, costing a few hundred dollars, offers more comprehensive coverage.
    • Seasonality and Timing: Moves in summer or at the start/end of the month tend to be pricier due to higher demand.
    • Company Reputation: Highly reputable companies might charge more due to their track record of smooth moves and fewer incidents. For your peace of mind and stress-free moving, it is best to hire a moving company that has years of experience.
    • Tip: On average, tipping a mover about $10 per hour per mover is customary, potentially adding $70 for a 2-bedroom apartment move, depending on your satisfaction with their service.

These factors collectively influence the overall cost, making it essential to consider each aspect whether you’re moving to Washington, D.C.

  • How does moving insurance work?

When moving and looking for a local and long-distance moving companies in Washington, D.C., understanding the protection options for your belongings is crucial. Two common types of coverage offered by movers are Released Value Protection and Full-Value Protection, each with distinct features and limitations.

    Released Value Protection:

    • What it offers: Basic coverage without extra charges.
    • Coverage details: Reimburses items based on their weight.
    • Limitation: Usually provides minimal reimbursement, around $0.60 per pound for damaged items.
    • Legal requirements: Meets minimum legal standards.

    Full-Value Protection:

    • What it offers: Comprehensive coverage available at an added cost.
    • Coverage details: Ensures the moving company takes responsibility for the complete value of lost or damaged items.
    • Limitation: Typically covers up to $10.00 per pound. This is a way for the moving company to limit its liability in terms of high-value items, but most items will be covered.

Washington, D.C. is home to numerous art galleries and museums, and locals may have large and fragile artworks or historic memorabilia on display in their homes. For these unique items, moving companies often recommend securing additional insurance through specialized moving insurance providers.

  • Do moving companies pack for you?

Most moving companies in Washington, D.C. will pack for you, but at an extra fee. Some let you bring your own boxes, but many want you to use their supplies for safety and liability reasons.

Doing the packing yourself can save you a few bucks, but it eats up a ton of time, and you might accidentally break things since you won’t have the same packing skills as the pros.

If you’re already spending thousands for the move, it's worth considering spending a bit more to reduce the stress and save time. You can usually find out if a moving company offers these services by checking their website.

  • How much should you tip movers?

The common amount to tip movers is $10 per hour for each mover. Tips are not included in the quoted moving price and should be provided once the move is completed. Your tip should be based on their productivity and your satisfaction with their work.

For a small move of 4 to 5 hours, it is recommended to tip each mover more or less $50 but if it is a large move of 8 to 10 hours, it is recommended to tip around $100 per mover.

If you live in or are moving to Washington, D.C. or in the Greater Washington, DC, you'll likely be aware of its high cost of living. Consequently, your movers may expect a tip on the higher end of the average, most especially if you are satisfied with their moving service.

  • When is the cheapest time to move?

In general, it is cheaper to move in the middle of the week, in the middle of the month, and during the winter.   Moving prices change a lot throughout the year. Like Uber, the more demand there is, the higher the prices are. The general rules to get a discounted rate are:
    • It is usually cheaper to move during the week than during the weekend. For instance, some companies will have a different hourly rate on Wednesday than on Saturday. This is likely due to the fact that people avoid taking time off from work to move, hence, there is more demand on weekends.
    • Moving in the middle of the month is likely to be cheaper than moving on the last or first day of the month. This is due to the fact that most leases are renewed on the first day of the month, hence, there is more demand on this day.
    • Moving during the winter is usually cheaper. December, January or February are most likely less expensive months. April to September is often more expensive since it coincides with the end and the beginning of the school year.
  • How many movers will I need?

Usually, a moving company will provide 2 or 3 movers. The number will depend on the company politics as well as the size of the move. For instance, if you are moving from a one or two-bedroom apartment without large appliances, two movers will likely do it. On the contrary, if you are moving a house, 3 movers will be a better option. If the moving company charges by the hour, the total hourly rate will be higher if there are 3 movers. This said, your move could also take less time, and the movers are less likely to accidentally scratch some furniture out of tiredness.
  • How many hours should I plan for my move?

For a move to the same city, the minimum will be 3 to 4 hours, but it is likely to be more than this. A two-bedroom apartment can take 4 to 6 hours, and a complete home could go up to 10 hours. Keep in mind that many things can influence the number of hours a move will take: The number of movers, usually 2 or 3. The number of boxes and furniture. Boxes are fast to move around, but appliances, sofas and specialty items can take a while. If a piece of furniture does not fit the stairs, for instance, you can count up to an hour to take it out through the balcony. On what level is your home located? Moving from the tenth floor will take more time. How long will it take for the movers to drive from their office, to your current home, then to your new home, and finally go back to the office? Most movers charge from door to door. Try to evaluate how many trips the movers will need to load and unload everything, then estimate the time for each run. Finally, add the travel time and you should have a first approximation.
  • Should I hire professional movers or rent a moving truck?

There are a number of things to consider before deciding to hire professional movers or moving by yourself, but the quick answer is: hiring movers is definitely a simpler choice, but will often be more expensive. Here are the things to consider:
    1. What are you moving? Do you only have a few boxes to move, or are you moving a full-size home with a piano and pool table? Try imagining yourself moving the largest piece of furniture, could you do it?
    2. To the first point, how is your physical health? Moving is hard on the body, and you surely do not want to break your back over the cost of moving. Hire movers if you think the effort could be too much.
    3. Are you on a tight schedule, or can you move furniture over a week or a month? The more time you have, the easier it is to do it yourself.
    4. Do you have specialty items, such as a pool table, a hot tub or a piano? These are expensive and need technical skills to be moved without properly. Make sure to get professional movers.
